Project 91

I purchased it new in Marysville Wa. (mid 1990) It took all afternoon to convince them to give me the one off the showroom floor instead of the demo for the same price. Since a hitch receiver wasn't available yet I had the roll pan removed and a bumper installed. The mileage read 000004 when I drove it off the lot. A Pendaliner went in the bed the next day. It has been in So Cal for most of its life and has been a really great truck. It still drives like new, really tight and quiet.
In 2001 (with 204,000 miles and a catyletic converter or two behind it) I decided it was best to have the engine rebuilt. Bored .030 over, it still has less than 200 miles on the 4.3l since it's no longer my every day driver. I keep it in the garage and only run it enough to keep the rubber from cracking, and the battery charged. Aside from the normal problems like sagging doors, the headliner falling off and some weathered rubber, it's all there.(minus the front bumper cover) I took the rest of the ground effects off to clean the road grit that had been building up and have decided to paint the entire truck. Some time ago a jet-ski fell over on a stand and nailed the already repaired driver side fender...again (see bumper cover story below). I replaced it with a perfect match the other morning (complete with stick on bullet hole, no emblem, and no bondo). I still have the original fender in the garage, not quite sure why...

I've been rear-ended twice with little damage. The bumper folded downward both times, and the top side of the brackets snapped at the bolt holes. Looking back, I'm glad the bumper was on there.
It's never been in a major accident and I'd happily drive it across the country without even thinking twice about it. There's no body-rot whatsoever, so I'm fixing it back up the way it was. The interior is in great shape, except for the sagging headliner and rubber mentioned above. I'll pop the windows out and replace all that when I spray. It'll take me a month to sand and strip it down right. Yesterday I removed, disassambled, and started sanding the tailgate. In the meantime I'll pickup the door hinge bushings and all the little parts I can think of (new clips for the tailgate latch rods, things like that.).

Work done so far:
  • Rebuilt original (un-blown) Engine, less than 200 miles on it.
  • New catyletic converter and exhaust all the way back.
  • Brakes
  • Shocks
  • Lower control arms and bushings for the front end.

After putting on the new fender, I put some of the body kit back on the truck to make sure I still had all the parts. So far everything looks good. Now it all comes back off. Oops, I almost forgot to take a few pictures before I pulled the decals.

While looking for other literature in my office (the other room) I came up with this. I must be getting close to the mother-lode. I know it's here somewhere, the info on the 3/4 ton road handling suspension package and engine mods. Here's a quote from the 1990 edition of Sport truck magazine which was doing a write-up on the GMC version. "It's very apparent that the optional handling package on our Californian, with gas shocks, larger stabilizer bars and fat Goodyears, contributes heavily to the track performance." "Ride quality on the open road and over pothole-dotted city streets leaves little doubt that the suspension is a bit stiffer than on stock S-Trucks. Most of the harshness came from the tail of our truck which also incorporated the optional 1625-pound rear-spring package-a must for those planning to load a jet-ski or a couple of trail-bikes into the bed. Add either of those and the ride smooths to perfection".
All I need now is that bumper cover. Where's mine you ask?

The sad story about my bumper cover

When the truck was a couple years old I forgot I was parked next to a basketball net... at my own house even! I clipped the pole backing out...
    Hey stop laughing!
It put a crease in the fender and a crack in the(previously perfectly waxed) bumper cover. A friend of mine says "Hey my buddy just got a new plastic welder and wants to try it out, let me see if he can fix it". It worked great!. The 4 inch crack on the outside corner of the cover was gone. I got it back from him on a Wednesday evening and was planning on installing it the next Saturday. Here's where it gets really stupid. On the side of the house we were renting there was a shed. This was a shed used for garden tools and, among other things, pallets with the trash cans sitting on them. Well, the landlord sends two yahoos over un-announced to remove a few things from the property...and the trash while I was at work. The cover..was...sitting (here's the part where I start to choke up)...over 2 trash cans, the most readily available form of sawhorses I could find out of the rain. He refused to replace it. (the guy was a dentist, I think they actually enjoy hurting people)
So if you see one, or know where one is, (not the dentist) please contact me using the link below. I've looked at all the aftermarket products and may even buy one until I can find a replacement for mine. I only started my search a couple days ago. Also, if you have pics of your original Cameo I'm looking for more to host. I just created the site yesterday in order to compile what information I could find into one place. These trucks are about as old as the internet.
